Round 2 Buriram Qualifying Report

After an evening of fantastic Thai hospitality, teams and drivers had an early start at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, for the first of two 15-minute Qualifying sessions.

The damp conditions which caused trouble for many drivers in yesterday’s second Free Practice were no longer an issue. Even before 10 am, track temperatures were high, around 43 degrees C, with humidity hovering in the mid 60s.

Clazzio Racing started where they left off in yesterday’s Free Practice, with Japanese driver Cozzolio Kei dominating in the Pro Class and Overall, even from the first flying laps of the session in Car 11, and eventually taking pole position for race 1 this afternoon.

Despite initially struggling to find the limits on a new set of tyres, Rick Breukers delivered an impressive performance throughout Q1, showing his strength as the Pro driver within the PRO/AM pairing of GDL Racing Team’s car 37, finally taking the second spot on the front row and 1st in class.

Thai driver Sarun Sereethoranakul in PSC Motorsport car 57 again showed his impressive form and home advantage, leading the AM class at the end of Q1, with a 1.3 second advantage over his countryman Suttiluck Buncharoen from True Vision Motorsport, who took 2nd in AM Class and 9th position on the grid.

Indeed, Qualifying Session 1 was a success for a number of local drivers, with Supachai Weeraborwornpong also leading the Lamborghini Cup class.

Qualifying Session 2 was lead early on by British driver, Toby Sowery, in the Lazarus car 3, holding off FFF Racing’s Armaan Ebrahim at the top off the timing sheets.

However, as the session progressed Clazzio Racing again took control, with Lamborghini Young Driver Afiq Yazid at the wheel this time. Yazid was able to take pole on his first flying lap, and then secure that position, going progressively faster over the next two laps.

After a strong Q1 in the PRO/AM category, GDL Racing suffered a minor setback in Q2, as AM driver Nigel Farmer had an excursion into the gravel at Turn 10 early in the session, whilst Australian driver Richard ‘Spike’ Goddard put in some impressively consistent quick laps for FFF Racing Team, to secure a start from the second row, 4th overall and 1st in class in PRO/AM. The Leipert PRO/AM pairing of Mikko Eskelinen and Max Ebenal, showed solid pace throughout qualifying with almost identical times in both sessions, securing position 8 on the grid for both races.

Despite missing Free Practice yesterday due to technical issues, X-One Racing were able to come back strongly in Q2, with driver Andrew Haryanto showing impressive pace, securing 5th overall and 1st in class for race 2 tomorrow morning in the AM class.

Local favourite, Top Speed Racing Team’s Weeraborwornpong in Car 77, was again strong in Qualifying , starting 12th Overall and 1st in the Lamborghini Cup Class for Race 2, with his main rival Petri Corse’s Gabrele Murroni a row behind in 13th.

With temperatures still rising, and possibility of rain later in the day, teams and drivers are looking forward to an exciting Race 1, starting at 13:40 (TST) this afternoon. With the lights going green for Race 2 at 11:20 tomorrow morning, here in Buriram.
